Wheelers Oyster Bar can be found in Whitstable's High Street, offering an
old fashioned, friendly service. As Whitstable's oldest oyster bar you will find
Wheelers charming as it stays true to the original unpretentious style of trading
from when it was founded in the mid 19th century by Richard "Leggy" Wheeler.

                                              The Seafood Bar

A selection of cooked seafoods and home made tarts and quiches are available
to eat at the bar or take away.

The perfect location of Wheelers in the seaside town of Whitstable allows us to
take advantage of freshly caught fish and shellfish. This also means that we are
very reliant on what is in season, but whenever you visit you will be greeted by
an impressive selection of seafood dishes including Whitstable oysters.

        A PIECE OF WHEELER'S HISTORY

Richard "Leggy" Wheeler, the founder of Wheelers Oyster Bar was born in
1824, and like his forefathers went straight into the Whitstable Oyster Fishery
as an apprentice at the age of 14. He finished his 7th year term in 1845, and
the following year married Mary Ann Foreman a mariners daughter.

His ensuing years found him fathering children, appearing as a witness in a
discharged smuggling case whilst Master of the Whitstable Smack "Bubble".

The year 1856 found his wife running a small shop in Whitstable Street as an
outlet for local oysters, whelks and shrimps caught by flatsmen, supplying a
demand from the visitors arriving by train from Canterbury and
coach from London.

The advent of the London, Chatham and Dover line to Margate in the 1860's
saw the shop become firmly established very much as visitors see it today.
